What size should a Logo be on a Website?

How big does a logo really need to be on a website?

In all honestly, not very big at all.

One of the stumbling blocks I often have with clients is them asking for their logo to be “bigger”. I always find it difficult to ask the question “Why?” when I should be asking “who is it for?”

The only reason to have a logo larger than 200px in width and 100px in height, (by the way that is the most appropriate size, but read on if you’d like to know why) is to satisfy the client, there is no reason other than that. Take a look at some of the most popular websites of 2023, they do not have logos larger than 200px, and some of them even just have the icon from their logo, however, they have strong brand recognition and that can allow them to only use the icon.

Ultimately the only person who cares about the size of a logo on a website, is the business owner, having a large logo does not help the website’s performance, it does not increase the user experience, and it doesn’t create strong brand recognition.

A business’s main focus on its website should be customer satisfaction, the happier the customer is and the easier the website is to navigate, the more likely the customer is to make a purchase. The design, layout, aesthetic and overall look of the website can be ruined by a huge vanity logo on the top of every page, businesses need to focus on their customer wants and needs when designing a website and when it comes to the logo, size really matters.

So how can utilise your logo within these size restraints?

The very simple answer is, you create three versions. If your current logo is a square shape or is reduced to an unreadable level when within the 200px width, then you need to adopt a “3 logo method”.

The 3 Logo Method is simply establishing 3 different versions of your logo, the first is your “Main Logo” to be used almost everywhere, the second is the “Icon”, which can just be used to elevate your brand and the third is the “Long Logo”, this one is the one you need for your website header.

As shown below, you can see examples of the “3 Logo Method” and how you can change your own logo to utilise this method.
